Lawrence Joseph Marsalli passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, July 2, 2018. Larry was born in Santa Clara to Joseph & Emilia Marsalli and was a lifelong resident and civil servant of Santa Clara. Larry graduated from St. Clare School, attended Bellarmine College Prep, and graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1944. Larry proudly served his country in WWII as an Army Staff Sergeant. When he was discharged, he met and married the love of his life, Elise Vanzin of McCloud, CA. Larry & Elise raised three children, Jerry (deceased), Denise, and Lauri Ann and loved and nurtured 8 grand-children and 4 great grandchildren. He worked for Wells Fargo Bank for over 10 years, and then joined Race Street Fish & Poultry where he worked in Sales & Marketing for over 30 years.
Larry lived his life and served his community with honor and dignity at all times. He was a wonderful role model to his family and friends. Over his 92 years, he served in several capacities. He was a volunteer at St. Clare’s Parish, served as Grand President of the Italian Catholic Federation as well as many officer positions in the local ICF Branch #5, was Past President and on the Board of Directors of the Serra Club of Santa Clara, a Founding Member and Board President of the Mission City Community Fund, Member of the Santa Clara Elks Club, Member of the Santa Clara YMI and Chairman of the YMI Annual Parade of Champions for 50 years, just to name a few. He was knighted as a member of The Miliary and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. His Community Service to the City of Santa Clara earned him the name “Mr. Santa Clara” and included serving in several capacities on: the Santa Clara Charter Revision Committee, City of Santa Clara Planning Commission for 3 years, Santa Clara Civil Service Commission for 8 years, Santa Clara City Council (11 years) and Served as the City of Santa Clara Mayor in 1967-1968. Larry was also Chairman of the City of Santa Clara Bi-Centennial Celebration Committee in 1976. He served as Assistant Fire Chief for the Santa Clara Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years, and was Co-Chairman of the Santa Clara Stadium Committee. In 2007, Larry and his family began the Marsalli Family Foundation which sponsors a Charity Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Clare Hall to serve those in need in his community.
Larry is survived by his wife Elise of 69 years, daughter Denise (husband Jerry), daughter Lauri Ann (husband Mike), grandchildren Jerod Marsalli, Brian Marsalli, Janelle Marsalli-Smith (husband Jason), Michael Quieto, Lisa Quieto Colliss, Kelsey Taylor, David Taylor, Katie Taylor, and great-grandchildren Kaylee Smith, Caitlyn Colliss, Allison Smith and Tyler Marsalli Smith, sister Doris Geraci (husband Mario), and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Jerry Marsalli, and daughter-in-law Nancy Marsalli, and his sister Alma Pirone.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Santa Clara Kaiser Hospice and Visiting Angels for the wonderful care provided at the end of Larry’s life. We are also profoundly grateful to the countless friends who have expressed their sympathy and love to our family.
A visitation and rosary service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at St. Clare Church, 941 Lexington Street, Santa Clara, CA 95050. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 13th at 10:30 a.m. also at St. Clare Church. Internment will immediately follow at the St. Clare Chapel of Santa Clara Mission Cemetary.
